Consultancy My background and interests have equipped me to provide a useful consultancy service geared towards both preservation and regeneration. In particular I have been commissioned to produce interpretation signage and education resources as well as undertake heritage audits and inventories. Interpretation / Demonstration In addition to undertaking research and creating education resources for clients, one of the most important and enjoyable aspects of my work is being commissioned to use the heritage forges in venues such as Temple Newsam House and Thwaite Mills. Here through interpretation, many people both young and old are able to glimpse a craft too often forgotten. I also use a portable forge for outdoor events at venues such as British Waterways Standedge Visitor Centre. Because the time spent in front of the public is often limited, I try to create pieces that can be completed within a session or even within minutes. Young people especially are better able to comprehend the techniques and processes more readily if they can follow them ‘start to finish'. In addition Malham Smithy provides a venue for School / Educational visits providing a real-time experience of a small traditional working blacksmith’s forge. Various items produced on the heritage forges are often sold as souvenirs and some can be seen at Malham Smithy and in these pages. Clients include British Waterways and Leeds City Council, Yorkshire Dales National Park and Museums as well as local schools and local waterways based organisations. |
